Introducing the 2024 Guest Speaker

TENNIS LEGEND JOHN MCENROE HEADLINES RBC JCC SPORTS DINNER

DEMONSTRATING  A LEGACY OF COMMUNITY EXCELLENCE, AND INCREDIBLE ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENT FOR 31 YEARS

The RBC JCC Sports Dinner 2024 proudly announces tennis icon John McEnroe as the featured guest speaker at this winter’s highly anticipated event. Known for his unparalleled achievements on the court and his impactful contributions beyond the net, McEnroe’s presence promises an evening of inspiration, insight, and celebration of sport.

The RBC JCC Sports Dinner, now in its remarkable 31st year, is a hallmark of enduring excellence and Vancouver’s premier networking opportunity for a good cause. This annual fundraising event for the Jewish Community Centre (JCC) of Greater Vancouver will take place on Feb. 28 at the Hyatt Regency Vancouver. Where champions go to give back, the after-work party invites A-list guest speakers and high-profile attendees to enjoy an exquisite three-course meal, open bar, Cadillac raffle, live and silent auctions and more.

“We are so excited to welcome John McEnroe to entertain our guests and raise valuable funds for the JCC,” says long-time Sports Dinner Co-Chair Mike Averbach. “Community is everything, and it is our great responsibility and privilege to do our part to ensure sports, activities and services remain inclusive and available to everyone.”

Featuring Olympic athletes, Jack Diamond Award winners and a notable guest speaker each year, this event provides a chance for attendees to be inspired by those who have achieved massive success in fiercely competitive fields, whether on a gridiron, pitch, hockey rink, boxing ring, track, or court.

For the first time, the Sports Dinner welcomes a tennis athlete as the guest speaker. McEnroe, a symbol of the “rock n’ roll” generation of athletes, captured the nation’s attention with his bold and irreverent style both on and off the tennis court. Boasting seven Grand Slam singles championships and nine Grand Slam doubles championships, McEnroe’s name is etched in the annals of tennis history. Since leaving the court, McEnroe has seamlessly transitioned to the broadcast booth, earning Sports Emmys nominations for his unique commentary and style. His best-selling books, You Cannot Be Serious and But, Seriously reflect his trademark retort to chair umpires and offer a glimpse into the mind of this sporting legend.

“McEnroe's tennis legacy, eccentric personality, and commitment to philanthropy will make it an incredible night,” adds Co-Chair Jason Apple. “Beyond the laughs and impressive auction items and experiences, the RBC JCC Sports Dinner serves as a meaningful fundraiser for kids’ activities and services for the elderly at the JCC."

Headlining this year’s Sports Dinner is fitting for the athlete, whose passions extend to philanthropy and the arts. As the Founder and Director of The Johnny Mac Tennis Project and the John McEnroe Tennis Academy, he is committed to removing barriers to success through tennis. McEnroe also established The John and Patty McEnroe Foundation, distributing grants and pledges to a diverse range of charitable causes.

“We are so grateful to have so many returning sponsors and to see the same familiar, smiling faces year after year. We really value and appreciate their longtime support” says Co-Chair Zack Ross. “Attendees can anticipate an evening filled with riveting stories, valuable insights, and a celebration of McEnroe's enduring impact on and off the court. We can’t wait for February 28th!"
